This jewellery craft is a ‘traditional’ one of the region of Maharashtra. It is a daily bread of lots of Artisans residing in and around Kolhapur. We have also started this venture by our NGO, Adhar Samajik Sanstha,Kolhapur, to help the women earn their pride and livelihood. The organization also imparts training to the new people with rare or no background of craft skills and aims to realize their potential towards a positive social change. As the NGO was started as a small team effort, there wasn’t any financial backing initially to help with the expenses and essential investments. However, with our clear vision & aim, we found innovative ways to implement it. Several people volunteered happily to help it achieve the ideas. Our target were the women who did not have any source of livelihood. While running this, there were many hurdles in the way when the trainings were started. Also we found that interest level amongst the women was very low. Due to the conservative social structure, women were discouraged by their own male counterparts in the family that this kind of initiative may not last very long. Many women even left the training program mid way due to their family objections. However, they started joining back because they saw their peers earning a better livelihood from this activity. Women had respectful jobs within the comfort of their own homes. They were not merely earning their livelihoods in this process any more, but they were also getting empowered. We at Kalapuri, make available a wide range of variety in Thushi for our beautiful ladies to choose from.
