Craft's Journey

Dhoti and Angavastram is the The Traditional Attire for Indian Men. Angavastram is generally a south Indian traditional cloth which is white in color. It can also be called as a stole which is worn by Hindu men as a sign of respect and pride. It is usually draped over the shoulders. It’s a long rectangular cloth which is meant to cover the trunk. Angavastram is generally worn along with south Indian dhoti majorly worn among the devotees in the temple. The Angavastram is not just a tradition in South as it is a garment but it is also used in many practical ways. This Angavastram is also worn by many farmers as a towel while farming. This piece of Angavastram is very much worn by Hare Krishna disciples and at times by Mangalorean and Bengali grooms as well as the maternal uncle of the bride in states of Karnataka.

Due to reasons like devotees are not at allowed to wear brightly-colored cloth while worshipping their deities, the Angavastram and dhoti are usually a plain white or a cream color stole with golden border to give the rich South Indian look and is generally purchased along with the dhoti and are sold like a set. An Angavastram and the dhoti have single strip or two stripes of color or even gold zari along with the border.

An Angavastram an accessory to dhoti, is made to be worn along with it to complete the rich traditional attire for men. If a dhoti kurta has been worn, then the Angavastram is worn just to complete the ethnic attire. This cloth is essentially starched, folded, ironed and then draped across one shoulder, covering as much of chest as possible. Kalapuri gives you a versatile range of dhotis which is made using fine quality fabric. One can also buy readymade dhotis which are available at Kalapuri’s online store. Our readymade dhoti s are for men who do not wish to invest time in draping it. The readymade dhoti can be worn easily and effortlessly during special functions. Our Hindu culture is enriched with Chaitanya (Divine consciousness). After studying various attires at the gross as well as the subtle levels, that is, by taking into consideration the spiritual perspective, Hindu Dharma has given great importance to attires such as dhotī–Angavastram. Instead of just thinking superficially about good looks and ease of wearing dhotī–Angavastram, comprehensive and in-depth thought has been made by Hindu culture such as enhancing sāttviktā of the wearer, protection from negative energies and ability to imbibe Chaitanya and whether it aids in the efforts for God-realisation.

Dhotī which is a rectangular piece of unstitched cloth, usually around 4-5 metres long, wrapped around the waist and the legs and knotted at the waist. It is made from a continuous thread of cotton or silk as Natural thread has sāttviktā and Chaitanya. Since the thread used in a dhotī is continuous, its sāttviktā and Chaitanya also remains in the dhotī in a continuous state and gives similar benefit to the individual who is wearing it. Upon wearing a dhotī, due to its pleats and fold at the back, Chaitanya is created around the whole body. Hence,it is believed that the individual is protected from the Raja-Tama-predominant environment and distressing energy emanating from the Pātāl (Hell region), resulting in reduction in distressing energy covering around your body.
